Kids Spectacles and FramesThere is much more to an eye examination than meets the eye. Regular examinations are a vital health check and not just an assessment of whether you need spectacles or not. As such they are a check of not only your ocular health but also aspects of general health show up in the eyes.

No matter what age you are, you need to have regular examinations. Conditions that you are not necessarily aware of, such as diabetes, glaucoma and high blood pressure, are often first detected by an optometrist (ophthalmic optician), who can refer patients on for further medical attention.

It is recommended you have an eye examination at least every two years and may be more frequently if advised by your optometrist.

Your Eye Examination

Kids Spectacles and FramesAll of our eye examinations are carried out by one of our fully qualified Optometrists. During the eye examination they will carry out a combination of tests to both check the level of vision that you have and also check the health of the eye. During the examination they will ask if you have suffered from any recent problems and questions on your previous history as well as that of your family.

Using different instruments the Optometrist will examine the interior of the eye to assess the condition of it, and check that the muscles of the eye are evenly balanced. If you are aged 40 or over a test for Glaucoma will also be carried out.

Kids Spectacles and FramesTaking into account your job and any hobbies or sports your level of vision will then be assessed to determine if it could be improved with either spectacles or contact lenses. You will then be given a prescription(numbers showing the strength of lenses  required for each eye) and introduced to our dispensing optician who will be able to discuss how your needs can be best matched.

Children

Did you know that up to 20% of babies have vision defects?

Kids Spectacles and FramesMost of these defects sort themselves out naturally but some children will need spectacles to encourage their eyes to develop.
At birth the two eyes do not necessarily work together but by 3 months of age a baby should be able to fixate and follow an object. By 6 months the pupils that should be of equal size, round in shape and black in colour.
The time between birth and 8 years of age is known as the critical period of visual development. During this time, visual acuity develops rapidly, and the brain 'hard wires' itself.
Between the ages of 8 and the late teens vision is still developing and it is vital to have frequent eye examinations.

Eye Problems

Amblyopia or 'Lazy Eye' - where the amblyopic eye achieves poorer acuity than the ‘good’ eye. This can be caused by a squint or other congenital abnormalities. If Amblyopia is diagnosed early, it can be treated and the vision improved. Often by prescribing spectacles or a patch over the good eye will help achieve this. The earlier treatment is started, the greater the chances of a successful outcome. It is essential that all children have an eye examination before they start education to ensure that both eyes are developing normally and equally.

NHS Eye Examinations for children

The NHS pays for all children’s eye examinations up to 16 and up to 18 if they are in full time education. The NHS will also contribute towards the cost of any spectacles or contact lenses that may be required.
